Fruits and Vegetables are not Diet Foods

| August 24, 2010 | 18 Comments

There are some people who think that fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, and nuts are diet food. If anyone eats mostly plant-based foods, then why do some people label these foods as diet food?

Is it because these types of foods are low in fat and calories? I’m hear to tell you that plant-based food is not diet food.

The reason I am sharing this is because, someone sent me a guest post and mentioned that vegetables and grains are diet food. I couldn’t believe that someone would send a post with references of this in their article. Had they not read any of my posts?

**Whenever you submit guest posts to fellow bloggers, make sure you have actually read their blog articles and have a general idea of the blog owner’s mission.**

I got a little sidetracked, but I’m going somewhere with this. Fruits and vegetables and other plant-based foods are not diet foods. These foods give life to the body.

They give you something that processed foods cannot not possibly give you. They feed and nourish your body and provide your body with the good stuff. Sure they are low in fat and calories which helps one lose weight, but they don’t fall into the diet food category. Tasty Watermelon

What is diet food?

When I think of diet food, I think of food that someone is eating to lose weight, well, pre-packaged foods actually come to mind. Like those you see with Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Slim-fast, and so for and so on. By the way, those foods are junk. Just read the labels and see for yourself.

Whole plant-based foods have not been altered. There is no label that has ingredients that you cannot pronounce. Whole foods, straight from nature’s bounty are the ultimate foods that that the body truly needs. These foods have everything that your body needs, without all the added stuff.

Plant-based foods/whole foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and other great stuff that is good for the body. Now do the so called pre-packaged foods that people, spend their hard earned dollars on, have these nutrients naturally within them? I don’t think so!

Conclusion

Plant-based foods are not diet foods. They are good for your diet and naturally provide your body with what it needs. If people keep thinking and saying that fruits and vegetables are diet foods, then this will cause most people to avoid them.  Don’t do your body a disservice!

If you want to become a healthier you, by all means increase your fruits and vegetable intake along with other plant-based foods.  You will definitely notice a difference within your overall well being.

The next time someone glances at your plate and says to you “that salad and fruit is diet food…you don’t need that.” You tell them that this food is life food, good for my body and it makes me feel amazing. You should try it sometime, you’ll be glad you did!

I’ve never thought of eating vegetables, fruit and natural products as diet food, because I like eating them all the time. However, this post made me realize that is how many people view diets (btw… I don’t like ‘diets’). Junk food is normal food to them. They want to eat junk food anytime. Natural food is seen as time-consuming, expensive and unique (au contraire). We all need to be learn more about food.

    Hi Evelyn,

That people see these foods as “diet foods” is a huge part of why people have such an aversion to them. So many think that the fruits and veggies are bland and are some kind of punishment. I’ve been taking more and more friends to vegetarian restaurants just to give them an idea that vegs can actually be filling and yummy.

I know that most people that consider healthy, natural foods “diet foods” are probably eating mostly junk. I just wonder what the author was thinking submitting a post with that reference.
Maybe they assume since you are vegan you must be “dieting.”

  5. I just chuckle now when people comment on my diet food or rabbit food or hippie dippie food choices. Fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, grain…this is FOOD, real food with real nutrients. I have enough self respect to feed myself what I know is great for me. :)

You are right saying that fruits and vegetables are not diet food. The interesting fact is that yes they are healthy food compare to what we eat now, but still many vegetables and fruits according to Ayurveda have the power to gain weight too.
Healthy food yes but not diet food for sure…

    Ok that should have been..

people didn’t shift to a more processed way of eating until the late 1950′s or early 1960′s.

    Hi Evelyn,

I definitely agree with you. It’s interesting that Westernized cultures have come so removed from a natural way of eating that we do refer to fruits and vegetables as “diet food.” This wasn’t always the case; people didn’t shift to a more processed way of eating until the late 1950′s or early 1960′s.

When convenience foods crept in (devoid of calories) so did the surge of the lovely health related diseases associate with that type of eating too.

These days it’s not normal to eat a meal of something as simple and nutritious as vegetables and fruits. Take a look at the food based commercials and observe what they’re mainstream media are advertising, check out the foods people are eating on the variety (television, magazines, radio commercials, etc.)

When I talk about vegetables and fruits, I try to refer to that way of eating as a “lifestyle choice” so not to continue the inaccurate labeling of this type of eating. If you notice a lot of your healthier weight loss programs aren’t helping this matter at all, since they refer to their particular program as a “diet”. Raw food diet, vegan diet, macrobiotic diet, etc., I’m with you, let’s change the terminology

      Hi Healthy Opal,
This is so true. Back in the day, our parents and grandparents didn’t eat much processed foods. As a matter of fact they raised everything they ate.

Yeap, people think I’m strange, because I stick with fruits/veggies. I just do me and never push what I do onto others. Now, if they ask and show genuine interest, then I will gladly share.

I use to label myself as eating a raw food diet, but I have since dropped that label. I’m just vegan striving to eat more plant-based foods. I’ve learned to leave it at that. I am much happier about doing so.

      Thanks for your input!

P.S. I made that correction for you! ;)

I like to tell people who make comments about my veggie/fruit intake that this is what real food look like! Somehow we’ve lost track of that.
