Apture, Wibiya and Disqus

| February 25, 2011 | 15 Comments

Every now and then, I like to make changes to my blog. I like to try new things to see how they work. What can I say, I am a person who does not mind a little change. This blog is now Apture Enhanced and has the Wibiya Toolbar installed. Today, I will tell you a little about each feature.

Apture

I installed Apture a while ago and I also wrote an article about it. I explained in my article why Apture is the Bomb .  At this time, the post editor feature is not available due to some technological changes that WordPress made in the newer versions of WordPress. I hate that, because I really enjoyed this feature. Hopefully the techie stuff gets fixed soon.

You can also enable the Apture Bar, but at this time, I have the Apture Bar disabled. The Apture Bar enables readers to tweet and share posts on Facebook and to search your blog. The reason I have the Apture Bar disabled is because it looks too busy with the Wibiya Bar installed.

In the meantime, here is what you can do on this Apture Enhanced blog. If you see a word in a post that you want more information about, you can highlight the word and a Learn More icon pops up.  Hoover on the  Learn More icon and you will find articles, videos and images related to the word.

Wibiya Toolbar

Wibiya is a web toolbar and application platform that you can easily install on your site. Add a large variety of apps that will boost your site’s functionality and reach.

The Wibiya toolbar at the bottom of the blog. Here are the applications I have installed from left to right.

  • Translate – This feature enables those who want to read the blog in their language the opportunity to do so.
  • Twitter Share Button – You can share a post on twitter by clicking this button.
  • Facebook Like Button – You can like a page by clicking the this button.
  • RSS Icon – Subscribe to the RSS feed in a reader of your choice.
  • Share – You can share the post on other sites by clicking the plus sign.
  • Twitter Dashboard - You can  join the conversation. You can also see my tweets and profile.
  • Facebook Fan Page – If you like the website, become a fan on Facebook. You can follow blog posts via Facebook and get other information too.
  • YouTube – I upload videos on YouTube and you can view my videos by clicking the icon.
  • Donate – If you like the information and find it beneficial, you can support this blog by giving a donation.
  • Notification – Click this icon to view recent notifications and announcements.
  • Information – This icon takes you to the Wibiya website, where you can learn more about Wibiya.
  • Down arrows - Click these arrows to hide the full size of the toolbar. Hiding the toolbar helps you focus on what you are reading without being distracted.

There are other application features available, but these are the ones I selected. Wibiya also tracks the usage of the toolbar and provides analytics.

DISQUS

I am seriously thinking about changing my commenting system.  I love the way DISQUS looks, but I am in love with CommentLuv too.  Decisions, decisions…

  • Please check out the Apture Enhanced feature and the Wibiya toolbar.  Let me know what you think.
  • Have you tried Apture or Wibiya? What are your thoughts about Apture and Wibiya?  I want your opinion about these the features, please share, do not be shy!
  • What do you think about DISQUS?  If you use DISQUS, please share how it works for you.

Wow! I didn’t think I would be getting advice/information about blogging on a site about being healthy but I’ll take great information from anywhere I can! Thanks for this post and I like the Wibiya bar. I saw it on some else’s blog and wondered “How did they do that?” Well now I know! Since I am new to blogging this was really helpful to me and I plan on installing this plugin as soon as I get my theme up.

By the way I am just curious as to why people won’t leave comments on disqus sites?

      Hi Tai,

Yeah, I talk about blogging information too. Something I also enjoy doing.

I think people don’t like commenting on disqus blogs because it doesn’t offer commentluv and also it can be confusing about how to log in to leave a comment. Some feel they have to jump through too many hoops just to leave a comment. I don’t think it offers do-follow links to the commenter. Not really sure about my last statement.

Most people like a simple way to leave a comment and some feel that disqus doesn’t offer simplicity.

I hope I’ve shed some light on your questions.

Thanks for stopping by and take care!

Hi Evelyn, I used Wybia on my old blog. For some reason, my current WordPress theme doesn’t make it easy to run plugins like this. But I loved some of the interaction it enhanced. As for DISQUS, there are pros and cons. The cons obviously are that there is no commentluv…yet. My understanding is that the good folks at CL are working on this. The pros, though, are that it is more conversational in approach on most posts. It’s as easy to comment as Facebook. Also, you can receive updates on only your comment if you want.

One other option for comments I’ve seen is IntenseDebate. Their interface is similar to DISQUS but they feature CommentLuv. Might check them out. Thanks!

    • Hi Bryan,

      Thanks for your feedback!

Hopefully the folks at CL will get everything worked out, because I love being able to share my comment on FB/Twitter.

I’ve dibbled with IntenseDebate before. I’ll check that one out too.

      Take care,

      Evelyn

    Hi Evelyn,

I like the wibiya tool bar especially that it has the translate icon. It has all the important features that a website needs to have. I will check those out. Thanks for sharing my friend :)

    Hi Evelyn

I may be a technophobe but I did notice your changes and they look great. Nothing on my site gets changed unless a techie does it ;-)

With disqus you may have a few people who won’t comment. I know some people in the commluv community who don’t comment on disqus sites. It doesn’t bother me. I don’t comment for linkluv so I’ll still be over whatever you use, as long as I can use it ;-)

    • Hi Patricia,

That’s okay. At least you know you’re in good hands with your techie person.

I’m on the fence about disqus. I’ll be doing more research on this. I too know some people who don’t comment on disqus sites. I want things to be easy and accessible for everyone, so that might mean me keeping things as they are. We’ll see!

That’s good to know, Patricia! I truly appreciate your feedback. ;)

      Take care,
      Evelyn
