When You Need a Break, Take It

take-a-breakWhen you do not feel like writing and the ideas are few, it is probably time for a break. I had no idea that I would not post on Tuesday, it is something that just happened.

Well, if I stick to an editorial calendar, then maybe things would not be this way, but I am spontaneous person, who does things on the fly.

I do my best work under pressure.  I try not to make this a habit, but sometimes things just happen.

My daughter had a doctor’s appointment this week and when she has appointments, I am a nervous wreck.

I cannot focus on anything until after we have finished the appointments.  As a result being a nervous wreck, I cannot focus on writing anything, no matter how hard I try.

As bad as I wanted to write, I could not bring myself to type one keystroke. Sometimes certain situations force you to take a break, even when you want to keep going.

When You Need a Break

When you need a break, take the break and do not beat yourself up for taking time away from blogging. It is easy to be hard on yourself for not blogging on schedule, but do not be hard on yourself.

Things happen!  Explain to your readers the situation, if you feel the need and they will understand.

When you need a break, take it as sign that you need rejuvenation. You do not want to have blogger burnout. A rejuvenated mind helps you come up with fresh ideas.

When you need a break, take a digital break. It is easy to get caught up with online activities. Take a break from Twitter, Facebook, You Tube and other places you frequent.

When you return, carve out time for those sites and stick with your schedule. Time flies when you are having fun.

When you need a break, get out and enjoy life. Blogging and being online takes a lot of time and if you are not careful you will find yourself spending more time online and less time with family and friends.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes you need a break. When Mr. Break calls your number, answer the call.  Do not look at the caller-ID and say, “I’ll answer Mr. Break later, I have few more things to do.”

The longer you put off answering Mr. Break, the longer it takes you to break away, which means you will never get the break you need.

When Mr. Break calls, please answer, because it just might be the call you needed.

  1. Hi Evelyn,

I was just reading about stress so I guess this applies too. Breaks are needed once in a while and too much stress signals that indeed it is time for one

  3. You are so right. On such days I remind myself (and my sister) that it’s OUR blog. If we need to slip our schedule, then we need to give ourselves guilt-free permission. I hope your daughter’s appt went well.

Great advice, Evelyn, and I have learned to do this. It makes me more productive. :-)
