Have You Had Your Vitamin B-12 Today?

My Facebook friend, David Steele also Administrator of the Earthsave Canada Facebook page shared a video entitled “Vegan Epidemic” by Dr. Michael Greger and I had to share this video with you.

A Few Words

There are some raw vegan and vegan gurus who think that you can get everything you need from your food.  While this might be true in some cases if you eat a whole-food diet, it is not the case with Vitamin B-12.  Make sure you do not skimp on getting a daily source of Vitamin B-12.  You may not think that Vitamin-B-12 is important, but it is.

I used to be inconsistent with taking my Vitamin B-12 supplement, but now I take a Vitamin B-12 supplement every day.  One of the main things that I noticed when I started taking a daily Vitamin B-12 supplement is that I rest better.

I also eat foods that have Vitamin B-12.  Some people would probably not consider Nutritional Yeast a food, but sprinkling nutritional yeast on your salad or adding it to food or beverages is another way you can get Vitamin B-12 in your diet.

More ways I make sure I get Vitamin B-12.  I recently started taking a multivitamin (whole-food based) that has Vitamin B-12 and I occasionally add spirulina to my smoothies.  Side note:  I stopped taking multivitamins, but recently started back taking them and so far so good.

Look for food that is fortified with Vitamin B-12 and do your due diligence to get Vitamin B-12 in your diet every day in some form, be it in supplemental form or from other sources.

  1. I eat lots of animal protein, so I definitely get enough, I also take a multi which just gives me an extra boost 🙂

  2. I am not a vegan, though I had been aware that B12 is an issue for those who are vegans. Do you think the results of the UK study apply to US adults across the board? I’d be curious, and suspect the results would be comparable. Can one take in too much B12?

    • Hi Kymberly,

I do think the UK study does apply across the board. I’m not sure if one can take too much B-12, but I guess anything is possible. I’ll definitely have to do some research on this.

      Good to see you!

I shy away from taking supplements but I do take a vegan B12 supplement. I alternate taking it with spirulina.
