How to Guard Yourself Today

There are many ways to guard yourself in this day and time. The question is will you do it? I believe that something has to strike a chord with you, as it did me to say to self, “Enough is enough.”

We are bombarded with violence, negativity, and a host of other things daily. And it is up to you, the individual to take control of what you will allow into your mind, body, and spirit. Nobody can do this for you. You have to do it for yourself.

Here are my recommendations on what to do.

1. Have a morning routine. Morning routines are necessary, and if you don’t have one, I encourage you to get one. I get out of bed between 6-6:30 AM each morning. It is time I spend praying, reading, journaling, and setting my intentions for the day. It sets you up to focus on what’s necessary.

I started this routine on April 1st, and I am still hanging with it.

2. Have an evening routine. An evening routine is a hard one for me, but I am working on it. Your evening routine can be whatever you want it to be, but it is a definite time for unwinding. Some of us never unwind, which results in our minds, body and even our spirits staying turned on. We function best when we can relax from the cares of life.

3. Be mindful of what you watch on television. You are the steward of what you allow to enter your eyes and ears. I stopped watching the news, and I watch little to no tv. When all you see and hear is negative, then it is time to make adjustments. Watching and listening to bad things is not suitable for anyone’s health and well-being.

4. Censor your social media feeds. You can control what you see on social media. You may think that you cannot control what you see in your feed, but there are ways you can filter things out that you don’t want to see.

Twitter: you can make lists, mute, block, or unfollow.

Facebook: use browser extensions to filter (Facebook Purity, Newsfeed Eradicator) out what you don’t want to see, you can even block the news feed altogether. You can unfollow a person without unfriending, block, or unfriend.

YouTube: choose your subscriptions carefully. Be selective about what videos you watch, because YouTube tends to recommend videos for you to watch, based on your watch history. If the title of a video turns you off, don’t click on it.

Take the measures you need to make using social media a pleasant experience.

5. Be careful of what you listen to. Watching something on television also allows us to hear too. But there are radio, music, and podcasts. We cannot control what others say, but we can decide if we want to listen or not to listen. One of the things that I am doing is not listening to anything that alters my mood for the worse. There comes a time when you will realize that certain things are not worth your time, especially if it is not uplifting in any way.

6. Always see the good in people. It is easy to see the good in people until they show you who they are. And whatever they show you, believe it. Seeing the best in others doesn’t mean you are oblivious to their actions. Be on your P’s and Q’s when dealing with them.

I mentioned a few things that you can do to guard your mind, body, and spirit. There are many other things to do; I just named a few.

Sometimes, you have to let a few things go to take care of your health and well-being.

You can’t be concerned about what anyone thinks about what you choose to do for yourself.

Ultimately you are the one who is in charge of your health and life, and you can’t let anyone or anything stop you.
