The Daniel Fast: First Week Update

March 9, 2011 by Evelyn Parham

Vegetables in Basket
Nature’s Bounty

Today marks one week on The Daniel Fast and I am learning so much about my relationship food.  I have not had too many problems while doing this fast, but I have had a few issues.

The Daniel Fast calls for no sugar or added sweeteners, I noticed that I am extra sensitive to the sweetness of smoothies.

I used a powder that has Stevia in it and used Hemp Seed Milk (vanilla) which explains the extreme sweetness.  Since this episode, I have not used these products.

No way was I pouring money down the drain, so I added water and drank it down.  The water actually cut the sweetness and I was able to finish the smoothie.

Mad Dash to the Grocery Store

There is a brand of crackers that I love and there were a few times, I almost drove to the grocery store to get some of these crackers.  But instead, I just crunched on some nuts and ate a nice juicy orange.

Sticking with drinking water as my main beverage is not hard, but it sure is boring.  I have made a few fresh vegetable juices and that was a nice change.

Temptations

I have no problems doing The Daniel Fast during the week, but on the weekends it gets a little tempting.

Imagine that you are driving and your spouse wants to stop at a fast food restaurant.  Well, my weakness is fries, but I was able to overcome, even though the smell was very tempting.

How did I do it?  I did not think about it.  I actually blocked it out by thinking about other things.  I know that I cannot have anything that is deep-fried, no matter how good it smells.  I had to keep telling myself that.

Just because food smells good, does not make it good for the body.

There was another time, when my spouse had some cookies and was smacking right in front of me.  I had to tell him to please leave my presence, because I could smell the cookies and they were tempting.

Why is it that when you are trying to do stay away from certain foods, someone will put that food right in your face?

I escaped that time too.  I have yet to cave in and I pray that it remains this way.

Things I must do more:

Pray/meditate, exercise, drink more water, be prepared and stay focused.

Overall, things are going fine.

That’s a shame you didn’t like the hemp seed milk. I love that so much, especially the vanilla kind. There’s no better way to get all of your essential amino acids and essential fatty acids than from the miraculous hemp seed.

Weekends are tough for me when I’m doing a a seasonal cleans. Weekdays? No problem. I’m highly structured, I pack my lunch and snacks for work. But free time? Eek! Looks like you’re having a great experience!

Hi JL and welcome to my blog!

I agree with you about the free time. The weekends are very tough. Packing your lunch and snacks for work is a good thing because it helps you stay focused and not sway. Good deal!

      Take care,
      Evelyn
