Become a Healthier You Series: Watch Your Emotions

October 26, 2010 by Evelyn Parham

Sometimes in life we experience some things that rock us to our very foundation.  Some of us will bounce back, while others don’t ever seem to bounce back.  The ones who never bounce back let their negative emotions take hold of how they respond to the situation.  As a result, these negative emotions do more harm than good.

Your emotional health is connected to your physical health.  It is always good to have a positive attitude.  A positive attitude will promote positive thoughts.  Positive thoughts promote good emotional  health.

I sometimes get in negative moods and I get depressed about things that are out of my control.  It is okay to feel these emotions, but it is not okay to let them linger within.  If you can’t control the situation, then you can definitely control how you react and accept the situation.

Do you know that your emotions can become deadly?  Your physical health is connected to your emotional health and when either one is out of balance it brings your whole being out of balance.

It is important that we have the right attitude about everything that we experience in life.  I am the first to admit, that it is sometimes hard for me in this area, but I am learning that no matter what happens, I can choose to wallow in depression and self-pity or I can get up and roll with whatever life throws my way.

I usually have a good attitude most of the time, but it is when people say or do certain things that trip me up.  You must learn that you cannot control what anyone says or does, but you can control how you choose to react to the other person’s actions.  Always taking the positive road will be and is a healthier road to take.

Attitude is the manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, esp. of the mind:  a negative attitude; group attitudes.

Whenever you have a bad attitude that has developed it brings with it deadly emotions.

Deadly emotions include:

  • Unforgiveness
  • Bitterness
  • Anger
  • Hatred
  • Resentment
  • Fear
  • Shame
  • Guilt
  • Abandonment
  • Envy
  • Jealousy
  • Humiliation

These deadly emotions can do harm than you could ever imagine.  It is always a good idea to release these emotions and not hold them in.

There are certain sicknesses and diseases that can manifest when you hold in deadly emotions.  It is always best to let things go and not let things eat away at you.

Hatred and Jealousy can lead to:

  • High blood pressure
  • Migraine headaches
  • Heart disease
  • Ulcers
  • Cancers

Pride can lead to:

  • Mental illness
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Death

Fear and anxiety can lead to:

  • Heart disease
  • Mental illness
  • Panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Heart attack
  • Phobias

Anger can lead to:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Heart attack
  • Heart disease
  • Heart failure
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Ulcer disease

Depression can cause:

  • Cancer

If you find yourself holding onto these deadly emotions, than here is what you should do.

  • Make it a practice to be forgiving.
  • Be very careful of the words you let come from your mouth.
  • Make it your duty to be around positive people.
  • Allow healthy thoughts to enter your mind.
  • Mediate on whatever you feel you need to.

In the midst of everything that happens in your life, you are ultimately the one who is responsible for your own happiness.  Decide today that you will not let anyone hinder you or cause you to have a bad day.  If you put this into practice daily, then the deadly emotions will not manifest within you.

What are some ways you respond when there is negativity all around you?

Hey Evelyn, great article. Some of my research in earlier times involved topics such as either ‘Type A’ personality or panic disorder and cardiovascular risk. There’s a strong connection between panic disorder and cardiovascular risk which is not commonly known.

My research demonstrated that during panic attacks or periods of heightened anxiety, a process called hemoconcentration occurs accompanied by a decrease in plasma volume, while the active constituents in the blood become more concentrated. This process can result in adverse cardiovascular events in predisposed individuals.

I find the entire area of mind body interactions to be quite fascinating.

Evelyn, is there any proof that depression causes cancer? That really scares me!

      Henway,

I don’t believe that depression alone is the sole cause of cancer. I think it’s just one of many causes.

It is okay to go through depression every now and then, but not okay to stay depressed for long periods of time.

      Thanks for chiming in!

Hi Evelyn – Excellent post and thoughtful question: What are some ways you respond when there is negativity all around you?

There’s more room out than in, so when the negativity is in me, I take it outside! That seems like a strange thing to say (and a strange way to behave), but I’ve found the outdoors to be a sort of healer. I live in the mountains, so it could be the air up here. 🙂

      Hi Vernessa,
Welcome and nice to meet you! 🙂

I can totally relate. So I don’t think that it is a strange way to behave.

When I had my garden in 2009, I was always outside and I really don’t recall ever letting things get to me. I do believe that nature and the outdoors are healers. It’s something about it…just can’t be explained! 😉

Thanks for sharing your take on this!

    Evelyn,

Emotions and food have deep connections. I am glad you wrote about it, whenever, I am sad, I turn to comfort food like many and it has not helped.

I am working hard to become “zen”girl, so I can eat healthy, be healthy and think healthy. 🙂

      Hey Zengirl,

      I totally agree!

I think food just numbs us for a little while and I guess that’s why we tend to eat more of it when we are sad, or depressed.

You are “zen” girl! You can do it! 😉

      Thanks for stopping by!

Yes, it is the lingering on these negative emotions that does the harm.

It is important to allow ourselves to feel them, otherwise we can’t move on – or at least, that has been my experience. But once we have acknowledged that something has happened and we feel sad, angry or whatever the emotion is, then it is time to move on.

    Don’t dwell on it.

      Hi Dawn,

      Welcome to my blog!

I totally agree with you. It is okay to feel those emotions, but it gets really bad when we continue to dwell on it and not move on.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

      Take care,

    Evelyn,

You make some very powerful points.

First off, above and beyond the health issues stress, depression, anger etc. are all food triggers. If people are going to overeat or eat in an unhealthy manner, this is when (and often why) they do it.

Add the unhealthy eating on top of everything else and there is a definite potentially dangerous situation involved with eating habits.

TBH, my personal eating habits are not always the best. At least not as good as I would “like” them to be. But avoiding having the unhealthy emotions (at least as much as possible) has been high on my priority list.

I am not always able to avoid them all, but I always try.

Really good and important stuff you brought up today! Thanks!

      Hi Steve,

      Thanks for chiming in!

My eating habits are not the best either. I always tell people, I’m a work in progress. 😉

I totally agree with you! It seems like when things are going well, I eat well, and when things are going bad, well, let’s just say it’s hard to continue with the good.

      I appreciate the feedback!

      Take care,

      Evelyn

    Wonderful post Evelyn.

What we see on the outside started within. Negative emotions can manifest as physical illness quite quickly until you can face, embrace and release these feelings.

Your tips are on point. Forgiveness is a cleansing act. Letting go makes room for growth.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Evelyn
I agree with all that you have written in this post. Excellent content. Very important too so I hope lots of people are reading and taking action. I can attest to the truth of emotional is tied in with physical well-being. When I went through a really tough time several years ago; my physical health really suffered. Soon as I got the emotions sorted, you guessed it….I regained my good health.

Great post Evelyn. I’m glad you wrote about the physcial problems that can occur with unchecked and out of control emotions. I think it’s also important to say that if one is continually struggling with their emotions to please seek counseling. It can help enormously!! Great work Evelyn!

I really like how you tie in the physical component to our not so lovely emotions. I would add that getting to the root of an emotion helps diffuse its negative effect on us as well. Knowing what is behind the anger or resentment allows us to examine and release it. Lovely job here as always, Evelyn. 🙂
