I Am Not Using Social Media for 30-Days

June 1, 2016 by Evelyn Parham

no-social-media-30daysToday marks the first day of my 30-day challenge of not using social media.

I thought about doing this 30-day challenge a month ago, but someone convinced me that my presence on social media is important, especially if I want people to buy my products and/or services.

Side note: I do not believe that my presence on social media is important. Investing in SEO is something I believe is more important and beneficial than being on social media. Plus, I have friends who have successful businesses and they are rarely on social media.

There are times when you have to step off the path that seems right to learn what path is best for you.

My mother used to tell me not to follow the crowd, but you know when you are a teenager you want to fit in with the other kids.

Well, even though I am not a teenager, it is easy to get caught up in being popular, noticed, and liked on social media.

I am taking my mother’s advice and I expect that I will learn and do a lot during my social media absence.

The Social Media Sites that I will Not Use for 30-Days:

Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and StumbleUpon are the social media sites that I will not use for 30-days.

My social media accounts will stay open, but I am absent as of June 1st.

I will journal each day and publish the journal in a blog post with my findings at the end of the 30-days.

How I Prepared for My Social Media Absence

I prepared myself for this 30-day social media absence by setting a date, getting the right mindset, confiding in a close friend about my plan, uninstalling social media apps on my smartphone, and reading a book about deep work.

I will continue writing posts, reading and visiting other blogs, and be updating my mailing list.

I will not log on social media and I will not share my blog posts on social media.

Side note:  I figure if I am not sharing my posts on social media, I can see how many organic shares I get.

My Reasons for Stepping Away from Social Media for 30-Days

You may recall reading a post I wrote about, Why I Kissed Facebook Good-bye.

I got back on Facebook in December of 2015, but unfortunately, my opinion about Facebook since publishing the blog post about Facebook has not changed.

Here are the reasons why I am leaving social media for 30-days:

  • cut distractions
  • quiet the noise to make room for creativity
  • spend quality time with God, my family and friends
  • connect with people in my community
  • create useful, valuable, and beneficial content
  • complete projects I should have completed months ago
  • finish my Get Published training
  • read the books I have not finished reading
  • allow myself to create
  • focus on just being.

Final Words

I am ready to see what lessons I learn during my absence from social media.

I convinced myself that I have nothing to lose and I believe that I will have a greater sense of direction without comparing myself to what I see others doing.

I hope to learn which social media sites I need to keep and which ones I need let go.

During my time away from social media, I will continue publishing blog posts 1-2 times a week.

Sometimes, you have to follow the heart’s lead and ignore what the mind says.  I choose to embrace uncertainty and see where it takes me.

Until next time…

BRAVO Evelyn! You are inspiring in so many ways. I love reading your blog because it’s loaded with good information. I think taking time off from social media is great! I especially like your reasons you won’t be on social media for 30 days. Very thought proving. The people that truly value your content will be there when you return, I know I will, and those that are not were not your “lifers” in the first place. Your mother gave you solid advice, and these 30 days will enable you to step back and regroup without the distractions of social media! God bless you! <3

      Hi Ms. Carolyn!

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words! I’ve gotten a lot done today, but there’s still the urge to jump on social media. I haven’t done it. It shows me how attached I am to social media. Glad I decided to take a break. I appreciate you supporting me! 🙂

      Blessings to you too!
