How To Make Soy Yogurt At Home

September 7, 2012 by Evelyn Parham

Greek style, fruit on the bottom, low sugar, fat free – the supermarket is stocked with many different varieties of yogurt. But for those who have an allergy or sensitivity to dairy, yogurt is usually a no-no. If you’ve been missing out, why not make your own dairy-free yogurt at home?

Here’s a quick & simple recipe for homemade soy yogurt:

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups organic sweetened soymilk
  • 1/2 cup plain, unflavored dairy-free soy yogurt with live cultures, OR 1/2 packet of dairy-free yogurt culture

Tools (be sure to sterilize all tools before and after using them):

  • Saucepan
  • Thermometer
  • Crock pot
  •  Several jars with lids

Directions:

  1. Set aside ½ cup of soymilk.
  2. In saucepan, heat 4 ½ cups of soymilk to 180 deg F or bring to a boil. Let it cool to 110-115 deg F, stirring continuously.
  3. Dissolve starter (dairy-free yogurt culture OR 1 cup plain soy yogurt with active cultures – be sure it’s room temperature) into ½ cup of lukewarm soymilk to make a paste, then add to rest of milk. Mix well.
  4. Add mixture to sterilized glass jars, cover and place into crock pot.  (You may want to place jars on top of a cloth so they’re not sitting directly on the heating element.)
  5. Incubate 8-10 hours in crock pot on “warm” setting, or until yogurt has reached the desired firmness and taste.
  6. Refrigerate for 12 hours.

Tip: If your yogurt is too runny, next time mix your soymilk with ¼ cup tapioca starch and ¾ tsp agar flakes before heating.

Enjoy your dairy-free homemade soy yogurt with fruit, or in a dessert, dressing or dip – the possibilities are endless!

Though I love yogurt myself, I was not aware of the amazing health benefits of this wonderful food till my dietitian shared some really wonderful stuff with me last week. Not only do I love my bowl of yogurt more after having talked to her, I was inspired to share the benefits of yogurt with all my readers- so that they could all benefit.
Now, I’m glad to come across this wonderful write-up by you Evelyn, which convinces me that Soy Yogurt is even better. Great info. and thanks for sharing how to get it with us too. I’ll surely try that and get back to you with my own experience!
Keep up the good work. 🙂

I hope I remember properly: soy is rich in calcium. So this soy yogurt is great for women since they usually have calcium deficiency (I don’t know one single girl that doesn’t complain of calcium deficiency)

      Hi Cristian!

If my memory serves me right, I think that soy is rich in calcium.

      Thanks for chiming in!
