Barley Grass – A Nutrient-Dense Superfood

I start eating alkaline on January 28, 2013 and have bought supplements that will help me.  Dr. Maiysha T. Clairborne and Dr. Robert Young both recommend a concentrated green powder.

Dr. Clairborne shared the brand that she likes and I am going with that one (Green Vibrance).  They both shared information about grasses, specifically wheat grass and barley grass.

In my quest for a good green powder, I kept coming across barley grass.  I am not a stranger to Barley grass, because I have taken it in the past.  The difference is that in the past, I did not know a lot about barley grass, but today, I know more about barley grass.

You are probably thinking, “Grass is for cows, how can it be good for me?”  Today you will learn about Barley grass and how beneficial it is.

About Grasses

Grasses are nutrient-dense, even more so than vegetables.  Wheat grass and barley grass are good sources of chlorophyll.  Chlorophyll gives grasses the power to regenerate our bodies at the molecular and cellular level.

About Barley Grass

Barley grass has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for at least 1800 years.

You can grow barley grass by soaking and sprouting the seeds.  When the young leaves reach the desired height, you can juice the grass.  Make sure you use a juicer that juices this grass.

I own a Green Star Juicer and I have used it for juicing wheatgrass.  It worked fine.

Barley grass is said to be the only vegetable on Earth that can supply the body with all the nutrients it needs from birth to old age.

You can buy barley grass at your local natural food store.  Many concentrated green powders have barley grass as an ingredient in preparations.

What’s So Special About Barley Grass?

Barley grass has chlorophyll, vitamins, antioxidants and enzymes.  Barley grass also has buffer minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium which help maintain cell integrity.

Barley grass has four times as much thiamine (vitamin B1) as whole wheat flour, and thirty times as much as milk.  It even has more vitamin C than oranges.

Barley grass tends to be less potent and does not have the tendency to bring on the dose related nausea that wheatgrass does.

A Few Benefits of Barley Grass

Known for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol

Balances the pH of the body

Alkalizes the cells, which helps the body function at its best

Helps maintain a healthy digestive tract

Discussion:  Have you tried barley grass or other grasses?  If you have, how did it work for you?

      Hey Msfullroller,

I’ve only had the powdered form of barley grass and from what I can tell, they taste the same to me. There is not a big difference in the taste.

I’ve only had the powdered wheatgrass too so when I try the barley grass it’ll be the powdered form too. Thanks for the info.

      Hi Jon!

You can find Barley Grass in powderd form in a Vitamin Shoppe and other natural food stores. I have not seen the actual Barley Grass (the grass), I have only purchased wheatgrass (the grass) from natural food stores and a farmers market. Barley Grass is very similiar to wheatgrass and can be grown the same way. If you have further questions, let me know.

      Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for the info Evelyn and I wish you much success with your alkaline diet. Green powders are an excellent natural supplement and will help to alkalize the body. Spirulina and Chlorella are also two whole foods that also help.

    Hello Evelyn,

People in India grow wheat grass at home, as they consider wheat grass juice is one of the best healthy drink which reduces diabetes, blood pressure and gives many more benefits. 🙂

      Hi Laxmi,

That’s great! I have not tried growing wheatgrass, but I am very interested in doing so.

      Thanks for sharing!

      Evelyn
