The almond is my favorite nut, or should I say favorite seed. If I was stranded on a deserted island, I’d definitely have almonds in my bag.
I thought I was being clever by making a healthy sweet treat with raw almonds and dates, but I discovered that the sweet treat upset my digestion.
I stopped eating raw almonds and dates for a several weeks, but soon found myself eating the sweet treat again.
This time when I had the almonds and dates, the almonds had been soaked and dehydrated.
The almonds tasted different with the dates, but not in a bad way, just different. I also noticed I didn’t have any problems with digesting the almonds.
My sweet treat. A date stuffed with an almond is my favorite sweet treat. I cut the date open, remove the pit, and replace it with an almond. The taste reminds me of caramel with a crunchy treat inside.
I learned that if I don’t want my digestive system upset, I had better soak my almonds. I can’t be farting all over the place; that’s just not lady like.
If you are eating raw nuts and seeds and having problems with your digestion; you probably should soak your nuts and seeds. Your digestive system will thank you.
Three Reasons Why You Should Soak Almonds
It is not essential that you soak nuts and seeds each and every time you eat them, but it is best that you do soak nuts and seeds most of the time and here’s why:
- soaking makes the nuts and seeds easier to digest
- soaking helps neutralize the enzyme inhibitors
- soaking makes nutrient absorption better.
How To Soak Raw Almonds
You will need:
- raw almonds
- glass jar or a bowl
- water
- time
Be careful when putting almonds in a jar because almonds as well as other nuts and seeds swell. Make sure you fill the jar half or a little less than half way, so that the almonds have room to expand.
- Place almonds in jar.
- Pour water into the jar, covering the almonds.
- Place lid onto jar.
- Soak almonds at room temperature for 8-12 hours.
- Pour off water.
- Rinse very well.
You can use soaked almonds for almond milk, almond pate, dehydrated snack, or almond butter from dehydrated almonds.
If you don’t have time to use your almonds after soaking them, you can always store them in the refrigerator.
Make sure you leave the almonds in the water and that you rinse the almonds and change the water daily. Use the almonds within three days of refrigeration.
Final Words
Almonds are very nutritious and if you want to absorb more of the nutrients from the almond, it is always best to soak them.
Don’t shy away from eating nuts and seeds because they upset your digestion. Maybe soaking your nuts and seeds will resolve the problem with your digestion.
If you are not soaking your nuts and seeds, don’t you think it’s time you started. There’s no better time than the present.
