Focus on Making Small Changes, First

January 14, 2016 by Evelyn Parham

change-takes-timeI remember my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and other elders when I was teenager saying, “Don’t put the cart before the horse.” I did not know what it meant then, but I now know what it means.

Some people want big change, fast.  It is very important that you focus on making small changes, first.  Doing so helps you eventually get where you want to go. Making big change your primary goal sets you up for failure and disappointment.

Putting the cart before the horse, is a huge mistake because the cart cannot take you from point A to point B; it has no guide and no horsepower. Where can it take you?  Nowhere!

What Is Big Change?

Here is an example of what I mean when I say big change.  A person wants to make a big change to his/her diet, they want to know everything they need to do to make the change to follow a certain diet.

They want to know everything so they can make the change immediately.  But the person still eats junk food, foods that are not allowed on the new diet they want to follow.

The change to the diet is a big change, but the person has not made any small changes to help set them up for success.

Focus on small changes because they matter for your personal growth.

If you cannot make the small changes, what makes you think the big changes will make a major difference in your life?

I am reminded of something my pastor often says, “Stop minoring in the majors and start majoring in the minors.”

Set your attention on making the small changes.  Small changes are what really matter. You cannot get to the big change you seek until you focus on making small changes.

Small changes will carry you through.  You will not be disappointed, instead, you will be enlightened, wiser, and happier for going through the process.  You took the necessary steps to set yourself up for success.

Eventually, you will reach the big change you desire, but you have to focus on making small changes first.

Final Words

Making changes is a process.  Changes do not happen overnight.  If you think changes happen overnight, you are sadly mistaken.

Focus on the little things and the big things will come.

Smart one here. We always want change to occur overnight; it’s probably the biggest reason most of us stop exercising way too early. I’m still on my quest for better health, but it had to start with something and it was a small something that helped me change my mindset.

Course, we’re probably never going to eat the same foods. 😉

Starting small is always the best.

      That’s probably true. 🙂

Hi Evelyn, your idea is awesome. I changed my daily routine step by step not tried to do all at the same time.
