Do you have a hobby? Is having a hobby even a thing these days? With the rise in smartphone use, social media, and having information at your fingertips, it is a wonder anyone has time for hobbies.
I recently asked a family member if he had any hobbies. He looked at me like I was crazy and paused for an eternity but eventually said no. I guess he had to think about it, or he probably thought my question was dumb, but either way, I made him give having a hobby some thought.
Hobbies are important because they can do wonders for your mind, body, and spirit. I have three reasons you need a hobby now.
What is a hobby?
You do a hobby for enjoyment, usually when you have free time. It is an activity you do outside of your primary occupation. Hobbies include collecting items such as books, stamps, and antiques, playing sports, learning a new language, playing a musical instrument with your band, and creating art (just naming a few). These activities take you away from the hustle and bustle of life; they help you stay grounded.
A few of my hobbies
In my last blog post, Why I Quit My YouTube Channel with Over 4K Subscribers, I mentioned that I am a newbie colorist, something I never planned. But after taking a break from social media, I started coloring. The more I do adult coloring, the more I want to learn.
Other hobbies I do are loom knitting, reading, and writing. Loom knitting is the hobby I do the least, but hopefully, I will find the time to fit it into my life because I enjoy the process of knitting a lot.
Why You Should Have a Hobby, Now
If there is an activity you enjoy doing or want to learn to do, I encourage you to go for it. You should not start a hobby because you want to make money from it; although it can evolve into a business, it should be something you love doing.
There are many reasons why having a hobby is good for you, but I only have three.
3 Reasons to Have a Hobby
- It helps you manage stress. A hobby is relaxing, calming, and takes your mind away from your worries.
- It helps you do something for yourself and invest your time doing something you enjoy – self-care, self-preservation.
- It helps you learn new skills without putting time limits and restrictions on yourself.
Final Words
After I finish my fun work (hobby), I feel renewed, refreshed, and ready to take on life even more.
If there is something you have always wanted to do, go for it. Who is going to check on you, boo? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Until next time.
Take care!
